Organized Garage Leads to Clutter-Free Car say Glenview Organizers

Glenview Car OrganizedTwo of the obvious benefits of a clutter-free garage are space to park your car and space to store your stuff.  Our “garage success stories” in Chicago and on the North Shore attest to that.

But another advantage of an organized garage may also be a clutter-free car. By having a place for everything in the garage, less needs to be carted around in the car.

We recently received a query from a reporter for tips on keeping the car clean and free of clutter, particularly when most of the passengers are kids. We told her that as professional organizers, we
have seen our share of messy cars over the years. One story that still
makes us chuckle is of the Glenview mom who was able to pull together a school lunch
from the piles on the floor and back seat: juice boxes, granola bars,
wrapped packages of sandwich crackers.

While we admire her resourcefulness, we are a bit shocked at what was
lurking beneath the cushions.

Garage and Car Organizing Checklist

We encourage our clients to keep both their garages and their cars clean and organized by
following a few simple tips:

1. Keep necessary supplies on hand. In the garage, store tools in one area, sports equipment in another. In the glove compartment, make sure you have napkins, wet wipes, and a stack
of garbage bags.

2. Ditch anything you don’t need now. The beach bag can find a home in
the garage after the summer, when soccer balls and shin guards fill a bin
in the trunk.

3. Assign each family member a spot. In the garage, Johny’s winter gear should be labeled and stored in its own lidded plastic container, separate from Jane’s. In the car, give each child a container for toys and distractions. This could be
an over-the-chair bag with small pockets or even a plastic shoe box.

4. Clean regularly. Sweep out the garage and put away the supplies after you have worked in the garden. Tidy up the car when you park for the day. Put the
toys away, throw away the trash, take school books and homework back into
the house.

5. Treat yourself to a regular carwash. A car that looks neat is a great
incentive to staying neat!
And a spiffy car deserves an organized and clutter-free place to park.
