Garage Organizing Makes Room for Parking and Storage

Some people use their garage for parking cars. Others use it as giant closet or on-site storage facility. (You know who you are.) We all have something extra in our garage, from bicycles to patio furniture, but if your space is so cluttered that you have to park your car on the outside, something has to change.
One recent organizing success story involved Evanston, IL clients who called MOREganized in to rectify a common problem. The garage was cluttered and disorganized, the cars parked on the street. They had piled up the boxes they brought with them when they moved into the house in Chicago’s northern suburbs many years before. Neither husband nor wife remembered what was stored in the garage after all this time.
The clutter had to go.
During their free consultation, we helped the clients define their goals for their garage organizing project. They wanted to get rid of old boxes and mess, organize the supplies and tools they currently use, and leave enough space to park their cars. We determined that we’d be able to use the shelving and organizing supplies that were already on hand, so that they did not have to spend money on an expensive garage organizing system.
Then we got down to business.
How to Organize and Declutter a Garage
Working methodically, we decluttered one section of the garage at a time, until all boxes were opened and cleaned out, their contents divided into three piles: throw away, give away, put away. Once one area of clutter was cleared, we moved on to organize the next section of the garage.
Examining what was left to be stored, we organized “like with like”. For example, we used built-in shelves to store tools and packing supplies, organized by type and function. We hung bicycles on the wall, with helmets and bike locks stashed nearby.
As we decluttered, we taught the couple some basic organizing strategies so that they could maintain the systems we customized for them. Our goal was to have the garage work effectively as a parking place and a storage area.
We finished the job quickly and efficiently, but to our surprise, the couple did not move their cars back into the garage right away. First, they staged a garage sale of gear and appliances they had found but had never used!
