A Checklist of How to Declutter and Organize Your Basement

An organizing project isn’t done until we’ve taught our client how to eliminate clutter and maintain order.
One of our clients, who lives in Glenview, IL, was an especially quick learner. While we organized her basement, we coached basic skills to help her maintain order. She realized that many of these tips could be used when decluttering and organizing other rooms of her home as well.
When she asked for an organizing checklist, we were happy to oblige.
BASEMENT ORGANIZING CHECKLIST
1. Break the organizing work into manageable projects. Decluttering the laundry area is one job, organizing the playroom another.
2. Prioritize those projects. Which is the most important to address right away?
3. Work on one project at a time until completion. Don’t get overwhelmed by biting off too much at one time.
4 . Begin each organizing project by eliminating the clutter. We can provide a list of charities and resale stores in Glenview and the northern suburbs.
5. Once you are ready to put away only those items you use or love, set up zones. Designate one basement closet for out-of-season clothing, another for luggage.
6. Spend just 10-15 minutes each day maintaining order. By putting away the video games each evening, you stay ahead of the clutter, and save time and effort later on.
